The Chicago Health Corps (CHC), an operating site of the National Health Corps, is a program of the Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago and its community partners. Through the CHC AmeriCorps program, members are placed in local organizations and assist in improving access to and quality of care for underserved communities across the Chicago metropolitan area. An emphasis is placed on direct service, outreach, and education. Current host sites include Elev8, Erie Family Health Center, Heartland International Health Care, Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago, and Seven Generations Ahead.
CHC members are not interns or volunteers but rather people who have chosen to commit a year of their lives to service and to helping underserved communities. CHC members bring energy, commitment and creativity to the agencies where they serve. Organizations benefit tremendously by hosting an AmeriCorps member as members help expand organizational capacity, raise awareness of their organization’s presence in the community, and help deliver needed services to the organization’s clients. Organizations that serve as placement sites contribute a cash match per member which is applied toward the program’s operating budget. Members serve full-time for 46 weeks.
Now in its 16th year, the CHC is looking to increase its effectiveness through the addition of new community partnerships. Now is a great time to get involved!
